Pond - Baddaseema pasada, Polonnaruwa
Submitted by
Udaya Amaradasa
This structure near the banks of Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama) in the grounds of the sprawling Alahana Pirivena (monastry) was being fed with water from Parakrama Samudra.

While the signage identified this merely as a pond, the peculiar tiered structure made me feel that this could have been something more than a pond. Note the small holes at the bottom of each tier as well as the the unequal height of each tier. Could these have supported a set of grids or some form of filtration mesh? Perhaps it was a water purification mechanism. Many possibilities came to mind but I'm no archeologist.
