Enough war already! If the war in Sri Lanka got more attention it probably would have been over by now. Nobody in the west is saying much about it except for DeLon who has been rapping about it, trying to get people to be aware of what is really going on. I’ve been doing my part in telling my friends and family and if we help DeLon get more attention we can make this an international issue and END THIS WAR! Watch the video and get involved.

I'm sure there are many folks who live in NJ making less than 60k. Out of the 60k, here are the expenses that I can think of right now:
* You will be taxed about 30% for federal and state taxes (not sure exact % as I don't live in NJ but I can't be too far off).
* You will need to pay for health insurance. Ask the company if they provide any health insurance and if so, how much will you have to contribute monthly for it. If the company doesn't provide health insurance, you can buy on your own but it will be very expensive (around $500/month) or you can take a risk and not have it but pay out of your pocket if you fall sick.
* Most consulting companies that place U.S. workers from out of town put them up at a hotel and fly them back home on weekends if they wish to. You might want to ask them if they provide you with lodging or if you have to find your own apartment. If you need to find your own apartment, it can be pretty expensive as well. I'm not sure how much the rents are in Sommerset but you should be able to do a web search and get an idea. This will be your biggest expense.
* Also you will have expenses traveling to/from work. If Sommerset has a good public transport service, you will be ok. If not, you'll have to find your own (buy a car or taxi).
* Food in the U.S. is not very expensive compared to places like Europe. One person can get by with less than $20 a day if yo stick to fast food.
These are the things I can think of for now.

Thanks so much for your reply. as you said its a consulting firm. actually i recently got married..its very much difficult to get job sponsorship from US and part from that it requires H1 B or Green card. they offered me (amt). in your opinion will it be sufficient for living in New Jersey state? and please mention monthly cost for a person, rent etc ... Job is located at Sommerset.

Gaining more experience in the field which im working is important. here in SL, we are not even getting paid industry standard rates. If you have any clients please do let me know who recruit SAP professionals.

Not familiar with this company. From a cursory search on the web, it looks like an Indian owned consulting company. So, getting down H1-Bs from the subcontinent and placing them in various projects is probably routine business for them. This is done for cost advantage. That means you will be paid much less than a person with comparable skills in the U.S.

If you are young and single, this could still be a good opportunity to work, gain good experience, and even apply for permanent residency down the road (if that's your choice). If you have a family, think twice about moving the family here. New Jersey is not a cheap place to live in the U.S. (if you'll be working there). Also, people get moved around to different cities in these consulting jobs.

Just my two cents.

Looks like Xoom money transfer service has stopped money transfers to Sri Lanka. So we are back to square one paying exhorbitant fees at the local bank or wire service to send a few dollars home in a hurry.

Depends on which way you are transfering. If it's from U.S. to SL, here's the rule of thumb that I follow:
* Large amounts (>$1000) & quick transfer : Wire Transfer from my bank - High transfer fees though
* Small amounts (<$1000) & relatively quick transfer : Xoom website (there's a link to it somewhere in this site. Takes about 5 days)
* Small amounts & slow transfer : Get a Money Order from your local bank or credit union and mail it. - Low cost

I haven't used other money transfer services such as Upul's etc. Xoom delivers the money to your home but not to a business.

If you are transfering from SL to US/Canada, you will have to settle for a Bank transfer I guess.
