1999  Sauvmiamoorthy Thondaman, leader of a powerful trade union for plantation workers died of a heart attack. Thondaman, 86, was the leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress and commanded the support of many plantation workers in the tea estates of central Sri Lanka. The number of votes he controlled made him an important player in Sri Lanka's politics.
