Charity Dinner & Project Progress

The Hope for Life Charity dinner was a resounding success with over 200 Houstonians coming together to show their support for this worthy cause. It was heartening to see the Sri-Lankan American community irrespective of their religion, ethnicity, race and political beliefs gathered together in harmony to lend a hand to “Project Rebuild”.

Press Release

The civil strife between the governments of Sri-Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam which spanned over two decades has finally come to an end. As we embrace a sense of relief that the strife has ended, Sri-Lankans as a nation are coming together to assist the civilians who were caught between the warring factions. Many are displaced, have lost their belongings and are housed in government run camps. The affected children are malnourished and recovering from physical and psychological trauma, some of which they will carry for life. Due to this long standing strife, many parents have no training or education to sustain a livelihood.
“Project Rebuild” is a humanitarian project initiated by a group of caring Sri-Lankan-American families in Houston, Texas to provide immediate relief and assistance with long term rebuilding and rehabilitation with an emphasis on the welfare of children in order to help bring some relief and normalcy to their lives. In order to achieve this, “Project Rebuild” has partnered with Give Children a Choice (a 501(c)3 Organization in the USA, and WeCare Sri-Lanka (a non-profit organization in Sri-Lanka).
Project Rebuild is currently seeking donations towards its cause via its web page, and via Facebook at Please show your generosity and open up your hearts to innocent lives that desperately need your help. Your money will help us to reach our target of $164,822.20 so we can provide infants and toddlers the milk powder necessary to stave-off hunger and grow.
Hope for Life Charity Dinner will be held at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston on August 29, 2009. The Honorable Mayor of Houston, Mayor Bill White, will be the Keynote speaker at the event. The event is expected to be attended by Sri Lankan Americans and some of the leading personalities in Houston, Texas.  The agenda of the charity dinner will include socializing, presentations, cultural entertainment, speeches, silent auctions and a raffle draw.
