From the website:
The children who have found a home in Little Smile Koslanda are not necessarily orphans in the usual sense. But even if one or both parents are still alive, all the children faced serious harm or even death as a result of poverty which was worse than we can imagine.
There are additional criteria which must be met if a child is to be taken in.
In Little Smile Koslanda we are not only concerned with giving the children food, safety and a roof over their heads. By giving each child individual support and education we want to ensure that they have good opportunities in the future. We therefore favoured a few children who were gifted but totally destitute.
When Little Smile opened in November 1999 the demands on the new staff would have been too great, if we had started off with only "problem cases".
So now the older boys, Prasadh, Madura, Namal and Ajilan, and the older girls, Teena, Gimsha, and Chandrika, help the younger ones, many of whom have been traumatised and are in poor health, to find their feet.
We have ALL learnt a lot. It has not always been easy. We had to dismiss one of the child care workers because she was more interested in what she could get for herself than in the welfare of the children.
