Candle Aid
CandleAid was formed in 1995 with the purpose of alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka. It is modeled on the belief that every person can do something to help another, irrespective of class, wealth and status. Founded upon the quote 'It is better by far to light one solitary candle than to curse the darkness' CandleAid believes that everyone has the capacity to light a candle, be it large or small, which will shed some light on someone else's darkness. As such, we function as a link between your act of generosity and someone else's need.

Givers League
Givers League was formed to provide interest-free financing to hard working poor entrepreneurs to start or expand their humble little business ventures. They just have to give back the capital in 24 monthly installments after a grace period of 3 months and such moneys are then recycled and given to others in their own communities, and the cycle thus continues. Due to this forward giving mechanism the product is called ‘micro forwards’ instead of micro loans. Micro loans are normally given by micro finance institutions and they are loaded with extremely high interest. Since banks don’t lend to the poor, they have to just depend on their village money lenders or micro finance institutions who charge interest rates they cannot simply bear. Therefore most poor people remain helpless despite their small business skills and capabilities and continue to pass on that poverty down their generations.

Please join our army of givers to help make a lasting difference in the lives of the deserving poor in Sri Lanka.

Help Sri Lanka with Wells, Food, Sanitary requirments and much more!!! Map and directions
The Humpty Dumpty Institute has launched a new on-line campaign “Wishing Well Sri Lanka” ( to promote and raise funds for a series of new initiatives in northern Sri Lanka that will provide fresh water and improve sanitary conditions to over 10,000 people in the districts of Mannar, Killinochchi and Mullaithivu. We are also seeking additional support for our well-known school feeding program in Velanai, Jaffna District.

I urge you to visit and be as generous as you can. You can contribute as little as $5 to this worthy cause. Since the end of the 30-year conflict in 2009, hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans have been streaming back to their original homes all over northern Sri Lanka. The Government is doing its best to absorb this returning population, but these people are facing tremendous challenges. Simply put, there is no infrastructure. Thirty years of violence and neglect has devastated the Northern Districts. Live minefields still pose a serious threat to life and limb. Homes have to be rebuilt. There is very little fresh water for drinking, bathing or farming since all of the wells are in disrepair. There are no toilets and the risk of life-threatening disease is very real. And new roads have to be laid.

With HDI’s “Wishing Well Sri Lanka” program, we are starting off in a relatively small way by building and repairing 230 communal and domestic wells and 100 new latrines. As we continue to raise funds through our on-line campaign, we will increase the number of wells and latrines we repair and build and hopefully expand our target area to other districts as well. Please join hands with HDI and help kickstart our new initiative by visiting and making a generous contribution. Many thanks.

Little Smiles – Children’s Orphanage
From the website:

The children who have found a home in Little Smile Koslanda are not necessarily orphans in the usual sense. But even if one or both parents are still alive, all the children faced serious harm or even death as a result of poverty which was worse than we can imagine.

There are additional criteria which must be met if a child is to be taken in.

In Little Smile Koslanda we are not only concerned with giving the children food, safety and a roof over their heads. By giving each child individual support and education we want to ensure that they have good opportunities in the future. We therefore favoured a few children who were gifted but totally destitute.

When Little Smile opened in November 1999 the demands on the new staff would have been too great, if we had started off with only "problem cases".

So now the older boys, Prasadh, Madura, Namal and Ajilan, and the older girls, Teena, Gimsha, and Chandrika, help the younger ones, many of whom have been traumatised and are in poor health, to find their feet.

We have ALL learnt a lot. It has not always been easy. We had to dismiss one of the child care workers because she was more interested in what she could get for herself than in the welfare of the children.
